The Origin

IPL: It is a professional men’s t20 cricket league which was founded in 2007 by BCCI (Board of Cricket of Control in India). An auction was held on 24 Jan 2008 to decide the owners of the teams in the new league. 

The first match of IPL was played between KKR (Kolkata Knight Riders) and RCB (Royal Challengers Bangalore) on 18th April 2008.

PSL: After many years of planning, the PCB officially announced the PSL in September 2015. The commercial rights were sold for $93 million to the initial franchise for ten years in December 2015.

The Legend Wasim Akram and Ramiz Raja became the ambassadors of the PSL for 3 years. The initial PSL seasons were played in UAE.

The Formats of IPL and PSL

IPL: Now the IPL have 10 teams. The teams are Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants, Gujrat Titans, Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals. The 2 new teams Gujrat Titans and Lucknow Super Kings added this year.

The teams play with each other in the league stage before the top 4 teams go to playoffs. The top 2 teams get a chance to qualify for the final in Qualifiers 1 and 2. The 3rd and 4th teams have to win two matches to qualify for the final.

PSL: Initially the PSL begin 5 times in 2016. However, in 2018 Multan Sultans was added to the PSL. PSL teams are Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Islamabad United, Multan Sultans, Quetta Gladiators, and Peshawar Zalmi

In the PSL, every team faces the other team twice in the league stage. The top 4 teams directly qualify for the playoffs as IPL.

IPL: The winner of IPL 2022 received 20 crore INR. It is the only league in the world that has greater prize money than the winning team. However, the 2022 runners-up received 12.5 crore Indian rupees. 

PSL: The winner of PSL 2022 received about 3.4 crore Indian rupees. The runners-up of PSL got 1.5 crore Indian rupees.

Players’ Salaries

IPL: No doubt, the IPL has been cricket’s biggest variety. That’s why BCCI doesn’t allow Indian players to play in other leagues. KL Rahul is the most expensive player in this IPL season got 17 crores INR which is more than the double money which Lahore Qalandars received by winning PSL 2022. 

PSL: The players of the platinum category earned a maximum of $170,000 which is nearly INR 1.27 crore. The top players of PSL like Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, and Shaheen Shah Afridi are in the platinum category.

IPL: The IPL gives many important individual awards. The highest-scoring player in the tournament gets the Orange Cap. While the player who gets the most wickets in the tournament wins the Purple Cap

The Most Valuable Player award is also given to those who make the biggest difference in the tournament. They all earn INR 10 Lakhs respectively.

PSL: The PSL also has prize cash for the highest run scorer, most wicket-taker and the player of the tournament. The highest run scorer and most wicket take get INR 3.75 lakhs respectively, and the player of the tournament earns INR 14.1 lakhs which is more than the IPL cash prize of Most Valuable Player.
